Comment
One of six scenes engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi's workshop after the lost frescoes of Cardinal Bibbiena's Stufetta in the Vatican Palace, executed by Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni after Raphael's designs. The date on Agostino Musi's Venus Wounded by Cupid's Dart (Bartsch XIV.218.286) suggests a possible date for all the prints made after the cycle. The figure of Venus is a Raphaelesque recreation of antique figure types. The background was probably inspired by Albrecht Dürer's woodcuts. Massari in Rome 1993 claims that it is impossible to determine whether Dente used a model by Raphael or Giulio Romano for this print.
