One of six scenes engraved after the lost frescoes of the Stufetta of Cardinal Bibbiena, executed by Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni after Raphael's designs. The date on Agostino Musi's Venus Wounded by Cupid's Dart (Bartsch XIV.218.286) suggests a possible date for all the prints made after the cycle. This print faithfully follows a red chalk drawing in reverse, attributed variously to Raphael or Giulio Romano, preserved in the Louvre, inv. no. 4035. Massari in Rome 1993 supposes that Dente's engravings related to the Stufetta were not made after the frescoes themselves or after the cartoons, but were modeled on Giulio Romano's drawn copies after the paintings. Massari also suggested that the background foliage is probably Dente's own invention. When the plate was later recut and reissued, the explicit eroticism of the image was also eliminated.
