Comment
Illustration from Joachim von Sandrart, L'Academia Todesca della architectura, scultura & pittura oder Teutsche Academie der edlen Bau-, Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste, part 2, vol. 3, Nuremberg 1679. The etching depicts the so-called Giustiniani Puteal, now in the Musei Vaticani, Rome (inv. no. 2589A), which is a sixteenth-century free copy of an antique vase preserved in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, inv. no. 173E. A drawing by Joachim von Sandrart after the puteal and probably serving as model for the etching is in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kupferstichkabinett, Dresden (inv. no. C7197). See Joachim von Sandrart, Teutsche Academie der Bau-, Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste, Nuremberg 1675–1680, Scholarly annotated online edition, ed. by T. Kirchner, A. Nova, C. Blüm, A. Schreurs, and T. Wübbena, 2008–12, http://ta.sandrart.net/-artwork-3022.
