Comment
Bartsch considers the first state of this etching as a work by Guido Reni (XIX.131.16) and the second state as a copy by Cantarini, while Bellini argues that these are only two different states of the same work. The print derives from a painting with the same composition but in reverse by Cantarini, now in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. While Bellini dates it to the 1640s, Massari argues that together with painted version it is an early work of the artist. The plate is preserved in the Calcografia Nazionale, Rome (inv. no. 304).
