Comment
The group of Europa and the bull derives from a painting by Guido Reni, a version of which is now in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (inv. no. 35939) and another is in the Mahon Collection, London. Bellini dates the etching to 1636 when Cantarini was still in contact with Guido Reni, while Richard Wallace in Boston, Cleveland, and Washington 1989 suggests a later date. The preparatory drawing in reverse is in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 2470). For further related drawings, see Massari 1997.
