Comment
The etching derives from Cantarini's painting now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan (inv. no. 362), which is in reverse direction compared to the print. The drawing in the Royal Collection, Windsor (RCIN 903423) where an angel replaces the figure of St Joseph is probably a study for the painting. The preparatory drawing, in reverse and squared for transfer, is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. no. 1975.113.1). Massari considers the drawing in Galleria Estense, Modena (inv. no. 1618), mentioned by Bellini as a preparatory drawing, only derivative. The signature of Guido Reni was only added later for commercial reasons.
