Comment
The reference to Guido Reni in the inscription was added only in the second state and has no basis. A study in reverse for the whole composition is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 7078). The preparatory drawing in the same direction is in the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 4150 S). According to Massari, the drawing mentioned by Bellini in the Fondazione Cini, Venice (inv. no. 32.456) is a copy after the Uffizi drawing. She also considers the painting in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble a derivative of the etching.
