Comment
Frontispiece to a series of 17 plates made after the illustrations of Andreas Vesalius's 'De humani corporis fabrica' first published in Basle by Oporinus in 1543. Giorgio Vasari attributed the main role in the production of the illustrations to Jan van Calcar (c. 1515–c. 1546). The more than 200 woodcuts were most probably executed by several artists supervised by Vesalius himself and perhaps also by Calcar. Titian, to whom the frontispiece attributes the originals, was first associated with Vesalius's work only in the second half of the seventeenth century. See Patricia Simons and Monique Kornell, 'Annibal Caro's After-Dinner Speech (1536) and the Question of Titian as Vesalius's Illustrator', Renaissance Quarterly 61 (2008), pp. 1069-97.
