Comment
Two different original sets and many copies of this series exist; see Miller 1999, no. 50. It is generally considered that the original set of 10 engravings was published by Antonio Salamanca, and Antonio Lafreri’s set of 16 sheets are reverse copies. This print belongs to the six that were made after the series of sixteen military trophies engraved by Enea Vico and published by Antonio Salamanca in Rome c. 1573; see Miller 1999, no. 50k. The attribution of their design is based on Antonio Lafreri’s stocklist of c. 1573, and is also supported by and anonymous drawing probably after Polidoro da Caravaggio’s lost façade decoration; see Ravelli 1978, p. 260, no. 386. For Vico's original prints, see under inv. no. 8224.
