Comment
The series has a dedication sheet to Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria, inscribed 'Illustrissimo potentissimoque ... Ferdinando dei Gratia Archiduci Austriae ...' see The Illustrated Bartsch. Along the margin of each print, a Latin inscription is added, not quoted from a usual source but created for the prints. According to Dillon in Verona 1980, two lively pen and wash drawings in Copenhagen, Kongelige Kobberstiksamling, Mag. VI. DEF. 32 and Mag. XIII. T. 6, are preparatory for two etchings of the series (nos. 22 and 25). The same inventions were partly used by the artist in the decoration of the Spanischen Saal, Schloss Ambras, Innsbruck.
