Comment
Reproduces in reverse Paolo Farinati's triptych painted in 1573 for the destroyed Capuchin church of Verona, later divided between the Musée de Grenoble and the Parish Church of Arona. A drawing of the central part of the composition, dated 1589, is preserved in a private collection, Verona, see Marini in Verona 2006, no. 159, related with another version of the painting, today in the Franciscan Church, Trento. An early state of the print is recorded with the date 1573, which is doubted by Albricci and considered by Dillon as a possible date of the painting and not the print. The first state actually bears the date of 1583, the second 1586, and was changed to 1593 in the third state, during the printing of which the plate has been damaged. Fourth state impressions have several cracks of the plate, while the fifth state was completely retouched, in Albricci's opinion, probably by Giacomo Franco. There are traces of imperfect biting of the plate at the tree upper left.
