Comment
The 151 prints (Bartsch XV.157.179 to XV.167.328) were originally included in a book, titled 'Achillis Bocchii Bonon. symbolicarum quaestionum de Universo genere quas serio ludebat' with the author's allegorical verses. Bonasone was not the designer of all the images, and assistants were probably employed. According to Frederick G. Schab in his review of Massari's book in Print Quarterly 2 (1985), p. 59, the quality of the engravings in this series is inferior to that of the survived drawings (sold at Sotheby's London, 13 July 1972, lot. no. 23), which indicates that their translation was done by an assistant of a poor quality. The book was published in Bologna first in 1555 and later in 1574, however, the exact date of the series is not clear. Elisabeth Watson (Achille Bocchi and the Emblem Book as Symbolic Form, New York 1993) suggests that the project began in 1548. The worn plates were retouched by Agostino Carracci for the second edition. Bartsch claimed the prints were Bonasone's own invention with some exceptions after Raphael, Parmigianino, Michelangelo and Prospero Fontana. The Budapest set is composed of prints from both editions. For a facsimile of the first edition, see TIB Picture Atlas, and for the second, see Massari 1983, vol. 2.
