Comment
Bartsch regards it as Giulio Bonasone's own invention. According to Massari, it was inspired by a lost model by Raphael. Frederick G. Schab in his review of Massari's book in Print Quarterly 2 (1985), p. 59, claims that this print is unlikely to be fter Raphael whose role as inventor was already rejected by Passavant, and there is no related drawing by the painter. The subject was also engraved by Agostino Musi in 1536, see Passavant III. p. 301 g. The British Museum has a fragmentary impression, inv. no. 1866,0714.74, which contains a snake instead of the caduceus at lower left.
