Comment
Andrea Schiavone's preparatory drawing is in the Museum of Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, inv. no. I 36 (see Richardson 1980, no. 141 and Van der Sman 2003, no. IV.4). The figure was inspired by Parmigianino's lost drawing (Popham 1971, no. QR 125, II, plate 120), used for the chiaroscuro woodcut Circe and the Companions of Ulysses, Bartsch XII.110.6, and probably also by the painter's other inventions. According to Van der Sman 2003, Schiavone's drawing was perhaps made in preparation for a fresco of a facade to be decorated with Roman deities. As compared to the drawing, the etching shows reduced plasticity. Second state impressions were retouched with schematic lines. Richardson mentions a state with a faint cursive monogram.
