Comment
Bartsch did not realize that it was a copy after Parmigianino's etching and noted it was a negligent work. According to Chiara Callegari's note on the mat, this is a first state impression. Dillon published the Budapest impression and emphasized the higher quality and incompleteness of the first state as compared to the second, where contours and shades were reworked quite rudely in drypoint. He attributed these modifications to another, less talented etcher. Schiavone's preliminary drawings for the print are at Chatsworth, Devonshire Collection, and in the Uffizi, Florence, inv. no. 1993; see Richardson 1980, nos. 135 and 136.
