Comment
Free copy after Parmigianino's drawing at Chatsworth, Devonshire Collection. This print is one of the several versions of the composition, which was executed in woodcut by Niccolo Vicentino (Bartsch XII.19.15), etched in reverse by Léon Davent (Zerner LD.63), etched in reverse in smaller size by Andrea Schiavone (Richardson no. 95), and in a version showing only the right-hand group (Richardson no. 94). In Richardson's opinion, this print was based on Vicentino's woodcut rather than on Parmigianino's original drawing, but Davis argued that the shading effects are in fact closer to the drawing. According to Chiara Callegari's note on the mat, this is a fourth state impression.
