Comment
The composition reflects the influence of Niccolo Vicentino's chiaroscuro woodcut (Bartsch XII.30.3) after Parmigianino' drawing, today in the Staedelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (inv. no. 402), see Popham 1971, no. 79. A drawing formerly in the collection of Prince Friedrich August of Saxony, Dresden had been considered as Schiavone's preparatory drawing for the print (see Fröhlich-Bum 1913-14, fig. 40), but Richardson rejected this attribution.
