Comment
This etching reflects the influence of Marco Dente's (Bartsch XIV.16.15) and Jacopo Caraglio's (Bartsch XV.67.2) engravings after drawings by Raphael as well as of an engraving by Enea Vico probably after Titian (Bartsch XV.282.3). According to Dillon in Venice 1981, Vico's engraving, dated 1548, constitutes a terminus post quem for Schiavone's print, which in his opinion is also close to Titian's Annunciation in the Scuola di San Rocco, Venice. Lili Fröhlich-Bum suggested that the etching is after a drawing by Parmigianino (see Fröhlich-Bum 1913-14, p. 218), but the attribution of the mentioned drawing has not been accepted generally. According to Chiara Callegari's note on the mat, it is a third state impression.
