Comment
This was Ludovico Carracci's most popular print, characteristic with its figure types and technique. The style of the artist's preparatory drawing in the British Museum led Bohn in TIB to suggest a dating of c. 1608 for the print, which makes it the latest of Ludovico's autograph printed works. Another drawing in the British Museum, inv. no. 1895,0915.686, was the final design for this etching and has been partially incised for transfer, see B. Bohn, 'Ludovico Carracci and the art of drawing', Turnhout, 2004, no. 232 (with further literature).
