Comment
This is one of Annibale Carracci's most famous prints, known in many impressions and copies. By combining etching and engraving, Annibale created rich alternations of light and shadow. Bohn in TIB summarized the influences noticed already by early writers: the composition shows the impact of Ludovico Carracci's Holy Family under an Arch (TIB 3905.001) and Andrea del Sarto's Madonna del Sacco, the atmospheric effects are close to Federico Barocci's etchings and the chromatism derives from Venetian art. No preparatory drawing for this composition is known.
