Comment
These three figures belong to a series of fifteen engravings on five plates representing the twelve Apostles, Chirst, the Virgin, and John the Baptist. The series is dated 1583 below John the Baptist, which is also inscribed with the publisher's address. According to Bartsch each saint is named in the aureola, but no later scholars mention this. The figures are Agostino's own inventions and are related to those in the earlier, lower quality series called Santini. There are related studies but all of them are of heads and not the entire figures, see TIB. According to Bohlin these are early pensieri, but Bohn argues that it is unlikely that Agostino made such high quality drawings for these small engravings.
