Comment
Bartsch related this print to the painting of the same subject, executed for the church of the Capuchins in Urbino around 1594-95 (today in the Galleria Nazionale, Urbino). Schmarsow 1909 concluded that the etching was made for its own sake, but modern scholars have compared it to the unfinished painting of the late 1570s in the Museo Civico, Fossombrone (now on deposit in the Galleria Nazionale, Urbino). The figure of the saint is a reduced-scale, reversed version of the saint in Barocci's Perdono (Bartsch XVII.4.4), therefore Michael Bury in 2001 supposed this small etching was concieved as an experiment in the technique of stopping-out, made in preparation for the ambitious large plate of the Perdono.
