Comment
It is probably the earliest of the four prints Federico Barocci made himself. The print reproduces the figures in the upper portion of the altarpiece executed for the Capuchins in Fossombrone in the 1560s and now untraced. The angel heads in the upper corners are very similar to those at top in the Perdono (Bartsch XVII.4.4) and was made around the same year. A terminus ante quem is provided by Agostino Carracci's copy, dated 1582 (Bartsch XVIII.57.32, see our inv. no. 6071). Michael Bury in 2001 claimed that Federico Barocci used this print and the Stigmatization (Bartsch XVII.3.3) as experimental plates, exploring different problems of etching to prepare himself for the challange of the Perdono. He also supposed that Federico called on technical help and eqipment, perhaps from his brother's workshop in Urbino. For the different views on a hypothetical early state, see Pillsbury and Richards 1978, no. 74.
