Comment
Bartsch identifies the subject as Soldier and a Sleeping Woman, and claims it is poorly executed after a drawing by an excellent master, probably Parmigianino. In fact, the print is a free adaptation of the relief on an ancient sarcophagus in the Palazzo Mattei, Rome (Bober-Rubinstein p. 67, no. 25). The attribution of the print is problematic: while Massari gives it to Giulio Bonasone and dates it to the late 1540s, Cirillo Archer doubts the attribution and argues for an early date at the very beginning of the engraver's career.
