Comment
Reproduces the painting on the ceiling of the Sala delle Aquile in Palazzo del Te, Mantua, executed by Giulio Romano and Agostino Mazzanega. The ultimate source for the composition and subject was an antique relief, which hypothesis is supported by the engraving's shallow space and the ruined state of the satyr's arms. According to Cirillo Archer in TIB, the engraver must have been aware of this sculptural source, for he has removed the landscape setting of the painting and set the relief against a flat, shaded background.
