Comment
The print was attributed to Giulio Bonasone by Passavant and recently by Massari. The latter proposes that the engraver used Raphael's original drawing, today lost. A drawing by Timoteo della Vite in the Uffizi, inv. no. 1359, possibly copies this engraving, but Massari thinks it also derives from the same drawn prototype (see Massari fig. 17). Cirillo Archer in TIB rejects the attribution to Bonasone on technical grounds and links its manner to that of Bartsch XV.14.2. An anonymous woodcut (Bartsch XII.35.9) reproduces the same composition. (The upper right part of the impression in the British Museum, inv. no. 1856,0614.138 differs from that of the Gabinetto Nazionale di Stampe in Rome, inv. F.N. 34187.)
