Comment
Copy after Giovanni Battista Scultori's print, Bartsch XV.377.2. The Virgin's face recalls Raphael's drawing in the Albertina, inv. no. 4879, while the position of the Child is close to another Raphael drawing in Chantilly, Musée Condé, inv. no. F.R. (64) 56. However, Massari in Rome 1993 claims the model for this print was more possibly by Giulio Romano, and also shows Correggiesque elements. There is a similar painting by Correggio mentioned in the 1713 inventory of the Galleria Pitti, Florence. Massari records an earlier version by Adamo Scultori made at the age of eleven. The plate is preserved today in Calcografia, Rome, and was recorded in the 1677 inventory of de' Rossi.
