Comment
Derives probably from a lost drawing by Giulio Romano for the fresco in a lunette of the Sala delle Aquile, Palazzo del Te, Mantua. Massari in Rome 1993 supposes that Giulio's model was transmitted to Adamo by his father Giovanni Battista, who worked with Giulio oj the decoration of the palace. The motif was inspired by the Antique, perhaps a gem, which is also true of Adamo Scultori's Three Putti with Dolphins, Bartsch XV.424.23, see inv. no. 5403. The plate was listed in the inventory of de' Rossi in 1677, and is preserved today in the Calcografia, Rome.
