Comment
After Francesco Primaticcio's oval painting of 1541-44 in the Cabinet Nord leading to Galerie Francois I, destroyed under Louis XIV in 1701 when the castle was enlarged on that side, and substituted with Louis de Boullongne's Allegory of Francois I, Minerva and the Arts. According to Zerner in Paris 1972, Léon Davent made this print soon after he changed his technique from engraving to etching. He also etched the same subject in a rectangular format (Zerner LD. 68).
