Comment
This is a multiplate print of a very large size (1545 mm x 1320 mm) when assembled. There were two other multiplate engravings of the Last Judgement in the 16th century, one by Ghisi (Bartsch XV.395.25) the other by Beatrizet (Bartsch XV.257.37). Casa's has been traditionally regarded as the first. As the plates were made in different years, Michael Bury argues that it was probably decided only after 1548 that the prints should form parts of a reproduction of the whole composition. Also, he shows that the set is a composite product made by five different hands and actually composed of twelve plates. (The Budapest collection seems to lack the small inserted plates 10 and 11.) Only plates 4, 7, 9 and 12 carry dates of the 1540s and full publishing details (suggesting they were to be sold individually), while the remainder do not, and the indication of the publisher is reduced to the monogram ASX. Plates 6 and 8 were engraved before 1562. Plates 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 11 are dependent on Beatrizet's engravings and therefore engraved after the 1562 publication of his print. (M. Bury, Niccolo della Casa's Last Judgement Dissected, Print Quarterly 26 (2010), 3-10.)
