Comment
The print reproduces the fresco's original state before Daniele da Volterra's alterations. According to Rhoda Eitel-Porter, this print by Martino Rota served more than any other copy after Michelangelo to spread his influence (see The Apocalypse and the Shape of Things to Come, exh. cat. British Museum, London 1999). It was the prototype for four other engravings (by L. Gaultier, a monogrammist M identified as Matthias Greuter, an anonymous sixteenth-century engraver and Jan Wierix). Very weak late impressions prove the excessive use of the plate. Rota himself used the composition for another print of the same subject, see Bartsch XVI.261.30.
