Comment
This is one of 130 plates that form a complete record of the spiral relief of the Trajan Column, representing the emperor's Dacian wars. Michael Bury reconstructed the complicated history of the ambitious project, involving several artists, see Bury 2001, no. 40. The prints bound together in the British Library, London, are accompanied by the explanatory booklet entitled 'Historia utrisque belli Dacici a Traiano Caesare gesti ex simulachris quae in columna eiusdem Romae visuntur collecta' by Alphonse Chacon, a learned antiquarian, printed in 1576. The original idea of the series is related to Girolamo Muziano, who formed a partnership with different artists. Later various agreements were made with publishers as well. Our series seems to be a later issue of c. 1616, after the plates have been acquired, reworked and published by Francesco Villamena.
