Comment
This series of playing cards, together with the Jeu de la Géographie, the Jeu des Reines renommées and the Jeu des Rois Francais, was commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin in order to provide the young Louis XIV with an instructive amusement. Its program was composed by Jean Desmarests de Saint-Sorlin. After being published in 1644 by Henri Le Gras and in 1664 by Florentin Lambert, the plates came into the possession of Florent Le Comte, who published them in one volume together with the three other series of cards in 1698. He also added the formerly missing suit symbols to each card and the letters R, D, and VA to the plates of the King, the Queen, and the Jack (fifth state).
