Comment
There is a preparatory study for this etching in the Royal Collection, Windsor, RCIN 904549, most probably representing Clovis and Clothilda. Both the drawing and the etching might have been prepared as trial pieces to the frontispiece of Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin's book, Clovis, ou la France Chrestienne, but were refused by the author. Della Bella might have later published it in Florence, since the plates were preserved in the Medici collection. On the basis of its style, the print must have been made in the middle of the 1650s, but certainly before the publishing of the book in 1657.
