Comment
The print belongs to a series of seven plates recording Giulio Parigi's stage designs for the opera that was performed as a part of the festivities organised on the occasion of the marriage of Cosimo de' Medici and Maria Magdalena, archduchess of Austria in October 1608. The performance consisted of the pastoral 'Il giudizio di Paride' by Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane and six interludes. Two of the etchings (Bartsch XX.61.15 and XX.61.18, see inv. no. 1916-225) were executed by Parigi himself, while the rest were made by Cantagallina. The etchings had a large influence on stage design across Europe. On the performance, see Roy C. Strong, Art and Power. Renaissance Festivals 1450-1650, Berkeley and Los Angeles 1984, pp. 149-52.
